Asia Cup Trophy Controversy: Will Mohsin Naqvi Skip ICC Meeting in Dubai? BCCI Demands Answers! (2025)

A heated dispute over the Asia Cup trophy has emerged, with a potential showdown between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looming. The refusal to hand over the trophy has sparked a diplomatic cricket crisis.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds the position of Interior Minister in Pakistan, is reportedly planning to skip the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Executive Board meeting in Dubai. According to a PTI report, Naqvi's absence is due to "domestic political issues." Instead, the PCB plans to send their Chief Operating Officer (COO), Sumair Syed, to represent them at the crucial meeting on November 7.

However, there's a twist. Naqvi might still participate remotely, as hinted by a source quoted in the news agency's report. This development comes hot on the heels of BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia's confirmation that the Indian cricket board intends to bring up the trophy issue at the ICC meeting.

The controversy stems from Team India's victory in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan in September. Despite their win, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who is also the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). In a surprising move, an ACC official removed the trophy from its display and carried it away.

Saikia, speaking to ANI, emphasized the BCCI's unwavering stance: "We have approached the ACC and sent a letter 10 days ago, but there's been no positive response. We will raise the issue at the ICC meeting starting November 4 in Dubai. The trophy will come, there's no doubt about that. India won it fair and square, and we just need to set a timeline."

"If we had to take it from him, we would've done so on the day of the final. Our position is clear: we won't accept it from that gentleman. The BCCI stands firm on this. We won't accept the trophy from the ACC Chairman, who is Pakistan's Interior Minister. It has to come, but not from his hands," Saikia added.

The question remains: Where is the Asia Cup trophy now? According to reports, it still resides at the ACC headquarters in Dubai. Naqvi has insisted that India collect the trophy from him in a separate presentation, but the BCCI has rejected this request.

This ongoing saga has added a layer of political tension to the already heated cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. With the ICC meeting approaching, the world of cricket awaits the resolution of this unique and controversial situation.

And this is the part most people miss: the potential impact of this dispute on future cricket diplomacy and relations between the two nations. What do you think? Will the trophy be handed over, and what implications might this have for cricket and politics in the region? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
