NHS Breast Cancer Service Takes Action After Failings Found
The NHS has taken significant action following the discovery of systematic failings in its breast cancer service. In November, a report revealed that the University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital had been performing unnecessary surgeries, missing cancers, and delivering poor standards of care.
The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has since apologized for its shortcomings and is investigating hundreds of cases. The trust has taken steps to ensure patient safety and adhere to national guidelines, including installing additional equipment to reduce unnecessary further operations.
A separate review by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) found that 12 patients had been contacted to discuss care, leading to harm, with some women receiving more extensive surgery than necessary. The RCS also identified missed cancers, potentially unnecessary mastectomies, and lymph node removals not clinically justified.
Despite these issues, the trust has assured patients that they are now receiving the same treatment options as those in other hospitals. The service has been aligned with modern accepted standards, and patient appointments have been extended to offer compassionate care.
However, the trust has also temporarily reduced the number of patients it sees each week, acknowledging the delays and working towards a sustainable model of care. The trust remains committed to listening to patient experiences and providing the necessary support.
