Lottie, who is 62 and says her favourite Cliff track is “Saviour’s Day,” is not going alone. She will be joined by 11 close friends, many of whom she has known for more than 35 years, all united by their love of the same performer. They have even given themselves a playful name that shows just how committed they are.
“We’re absolutely die-hard fans – this is way more than a casual pastime for me,” she explains, describing how their shared passion has grown into a huge part of their lives. Calling themselves “the Cliffettes,” this group has travelled widely to see him, with some members recently flying all the way to Australia and attending every one of the eight shows on his tour there. For them, it is not just fandom; it is a lifestyle.
Lottie’s connection to Cliff goes back decades. She first saw him perform live on his I’m Nearly Famous Tour in 1976, when she was just 13 years old. That early experience clearly left a mark, because since then she says she has attended every single tour he has done, with only one exception. As she puts it, the older she got and the more financially independent she became, the more determined she was to get to as many concerts as humanly possible.
She does not have a precise tally of how many shows she has been to, but she is confident the total has passed 200, maybe by quite a margin. Following her idol has taken her across the UK and even around Europe, as she arranges trips specifically to catch his concerts in different countries. Her husband, far from discouraging her, simply tells her, “Just go, babe,” whenever another date appears on the calendar – a supportive attitude that many music fans might envy.
Originally from West Heath in Birmingham and now living in Lincolnshire, Lottie has turned her enthusiasm into a sort of personal archive. She has kept the programme and ticket stub from every single concert she has attended, creating a paper trail that documents both her journey as a fan and the evolving world of live music. One detail that really shows how times have changed is the price: she recalls seeing him at the Birmingham Odeon in 1973 for just £2.50, while today’s tickets often cost more than £100. That kind of price jump is likely to spark debate among concert-goers about whether live music has become too expensive – or whether the experience is still worth every penny.
Her fascination with Sir Cliff started even before she was a regular at his concerts. She first became hooked when he fronted the television show It’s Cliff Richard, which aired from 1970 to 1974. From there, everything snowballed: she began following his performances more closely, and that early TV exposure turned into a lifelong dedication. In her words, that was the moment when “the rest was history,” because she discovered not just an entertainer, but someone who seemed to connect personally with his audience.
Ask her why she has stayed loyal for so long, and she talks about the experience of seeing him live. She believes he is fantastic on stage and genuinely warm with his fans, making people feel seen and appreciated rather than just part of a crowd. But there is another layer to it: going to his shows has brought an entire friendship circle into her life. For Lottie and the Cliffettes, it is about travelling together, sharing jokes, and having a good giggle before, during and after each concert. The music is the starting point, but the sense of community keeps them coming back.
Over the years, Lottie has also met Sir Cliff in person several times, adding another dimension to her admiration. One memorable encounter happened while she was queuing for his concert at the NEC in 1990, when she describes him as a true gentleman. She says he comes across as kind, polite and sincerely grateful to the people who have supported him throughout his career, always behaving with courtesy and good manners. For long-term fans, that kind of personal impression can matter just as much as the music itself.
When people ask how he is still performing at the age of 85, Lottie has a straightforward answer: he simply loves it. In her view, he thrives on being on stage, touring, and connecting with audiences night after night. She recalls him saying that he would never retire because he does not want to be one of those artists who steps away and then returns for a “comeback tour” later. That stance could be seen as inspiring commitment – or, depending on your perspective, a controversial refusal to slow down in an industry that often expects older performers to step aside.
